One of my favorite activities is camping. Getting out in nature and roughing it just feels right. I think it’s because it allows our family to focus on each other and not get distracted by the hundreds of chores and activities that we could or should be doing at home.
For most of our trips, we’ve stayed at campgrounds – mostly modern. I do like running water, hot showers, and flushing toilets. On a couple of our most recent road trips, we’ve done more primative and even dispersed camping. The biggest downside is losing running water and real toilets, but you also lose other campers!
Some of my greatest camping trips have been wrecked by other campers. There is nothing I hate worse than drunk rude idiots in the tent next door swearing and being loud late into the night when my young kids (with their young ears) can hear everything. I don’t go camping to listen to that!
Dispersed camping does require you to bring in your own water and requires more planning and equipment, but being alone in the middle of nowhere is now my favorite!
